Potassium replacement therapy is recommended for patients whose serum potassium levels fall below 4 mEq/L, even if they do not display clinical signs of hypokalaemia. Since only 2% of total body potassium exists in the blood serum, normal serum levels can disguise severe overall potassium deficiency. If left undetected, hypokalaemia can result in serious complications for otherwise healthy-appearing patients with CRF. Research has indicated that dietary potassium supplementation alone can sometimes slow the progression of CRF. Potassium gluconate is the preferred choice for potassium replacement therapy in cats. Long-term potassium supplementation at a daily dose of 2 mEq is advised for all cats suffering from CRF.
