Feeding Guidelines
Don’t over-treat ~ While it may be hard to resist when your furry friend begs for more, it's important to be mindful and keep treat consumption in check. Treats should be a supplement to your pet's regular diet. Just like us, too many treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of their diet, which needs to be complete and well-rounded for their health. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake; adjust regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, especially considering what they have eaten during training sessions. This applies to treats given as rewards for good behavior as well. If not managed, your pet may gradually gain weight, and excess weight can be detrimental to their health.
Treat Wise ~ We advise that you supervise your pet while they enjoy their treats, especially when trying a new kind. Some dogs (though rare in cats) can be overly eager when it comes to tasty morsels and may not chew properly, which could lead to choking.
When to give treats to your pet ~ The best time to offer treats is between meals, rather than immediately before or after feeding. Select a treat that your pet will find enjoyable. If you’re using treats as training aids, they are less effective just after your pet has had a full meal.
Benefits
Maintaining your pet's oral and dental hygiene is crucial. Since they can’t communicate when they’re in pain, regular checks of their gums and teeth are important. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats helps to reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Regularly brushing your pet's teeth is also advisable!
Treats during training sessions: Treats are valuable tools for training as they help your pet stay focused on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. For training, treats should ideally be small and easily swallowed, requiring minimal chewing so you can reward good behavior promptly and frequently. The best training treats are relatively soft and about the size of a pea. Pets care less about the size of the treat and more about the quantity. Larger treats work better as rewards for good behavior, as they require your pet to stop, chew, and take their time eating.
Using dog treats effectively: The best way to use treats is to encourage a calm and submissive state. Avoid using treats as rewards for excited or overstimulated behavior. Always allow your pet to smell the treat first, holding it up out of reach and waiting. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can detect scents from over 5 meters away, so you don’t need to put the treat right under their nose. Once they catch the scent, they may jump around or even leap onto you. If this happens, communicate your disapproval with your body language and attitude; your patience as an owner will be rewarded with a well-behaved pet. They will learn that a calm and composed approach yields results, sitting quietly and looking at you in anticipation. At the moment they are calm, reward them with the treat. Do not use treats to reinforce excited behavior; instead, use them to encourage calmness and submission.
What types of treats are suitable for your dog's or cat's breed, size, and age?
We recommend supervising your pet while they enjoy their treats, especially when introducing a new kind. Many dogs tend to gulp down treats without chewing, so keep an eye on pets of all sizes and ages until you are confident they can handle it safely. Cats typically gnaw on treats rather than devour them in seconds. Smaller dogs may find larger bones or treats too big, while larger dogs might try to swallow medium-sized harder treats without bothering to chew. Older pets with dental issues may require softer chews, so it's important to consider your pet’s size and eating habits.
