What types of treats are appropriate for your dog or cat based on their breed, size, and age?
We advise supervising your pet while they enjoy their treats, particularly when introducing a new one. Many dogs tend to gulp down treats without chewing, so it's important to keep an eye on pets of all sizes and ages until you're confident they can handle it safely. Cats typically take their time to gnaw on a treat rather than consuming it all at once. Smaller dogs might find shank bones and similar items a bit too large, while larger breeds may attempt to swallow medium-sized harder treats without chewing. Older pets with dental issues may require a softer chew, so it's essential to assess your pet’s size and eating habits.

Storage: Keep in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. Ensure the pouched product is zip-locked for freshness. For bulk purchases, store any unused product in an airtight container to maintain freshness and hygiene.

Benefits

Maintaining oral and dental hygiene is crucial for your pets. They cannot communicate when they are in discomfort, so it's important to regularly check their gums and teeth. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats can assist in removing plaque and tartar. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is also advisable!

Treats for training sessions: Treats are an effective tool during training as they help to keep your pet focused on you and the learning experience, regardless of their age. Ideally, training treats should be small and easy to swallow, requiring minimal chewing so you can reward behaviors promptly and frequently. The best training treats are relatively soft and about the size of a pea. Pets are less concerned about the size of the treat; it’s the quantity that impresses them. Larger treats work well for rewarding good behavior, as they require your pet to pause, chew, and take their time enjoying it.

How to utilize dog treats most effectively: The best approach to using treats is to promote a calm, submissive state. Avoid using treats to reward an excited or overly stimulated mindset. Always allow your pet to sniff the treat first, but hold it up and wait. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can detect scents from over 5 meters away, so there’s no need to put the treat right under their nose. Once they catch the scent, dogs may jump around initially or even jump on you. If this occurs, communicate your disapproval through your demeanor and body language; your patience as an owner will lead to a well-mannered pet. They will soon learn that a calm approach yields results, sitting quietly and waiting for you while looking at you with anticipation. At the moment they are calm, give them the treat. Do not use treats to reward an excited pet; instead, use them to reinforce calm, submissive behavior.

Feeding Guidelines

Don’t over-treat ~ While it might be tempting to indulge your furry friend when they beg for more, it's important not to overdo it and to keep treats regulated. Treats should supplement your pet’s diet. Just like us, excessive treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet's diet, which must be complete and nutritious to keep them healthy. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, so adjust regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, taking into account what they have consumed in treats during training sessions throughout the day. This also applies to treats given as general rewards for good behavior. If you don't manage this, your pet will gradually gain weight, and excess weight can adversely affect their health.

Treat Wise ~ We always suggest supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, particularly when trying something new. Some dogs (unlike cats) can be overly enthusiastic about tasty morsels and may not chew properly, which could lead to choking.

When to offer treats to your pet ~ The best time to give treats is between meals and not immediately before or after a meal. Choose a treat that your pet will find appealing. If you’re using treats as a training aid, they will not be as effective right after your pet has eaten a full meal.
