Benefits

Maintaining your pet's oral and dental hygiene is crucial. They can't express their discomfort, so it's vital to regularly check their gums and teeth. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats can aid in the removal of plaque and tartar. Regularly brushing your pet's teeth is also advisable!

Treats can be beneficial during training sessions: They serve as an effective tool in training since they help keep your pet focused on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. For training, treats should ideally be small and easily consumed, requiring minimal chewing so you can quickly and frequently reward desired behaviors. Ideal training treats are soft and about the size of a pea. Pets are more impressed by the quantity of treats rather than their size. Larger treats are better suited for rewarding significant achievements, as your pet will need to pause, chew, and take their time enjoying them.

How to use dog treats most effectively: The best way to utilize treats is to reinforce a calm, submissive state. Avoid rewarding an excited, overly stimulated state of mind with treats. Always allow your pet to sniff the treat first, holding it up out of their reach and waiting. Remember, pets, particularly dogs, can smell from over 5 meters away, so there’s no need to place the treat directly under their nose. Once they catch the scent, dogs may initially bounce around or even jump on you. If this occurs, convey disapproval through your demeanor and body language; your patience as an owner will result in a well-mannered pet. They will learn that a calm approach yields results, sitting and waiting with quiet anticipation. At the moment of calm, reward them with the treat. Use treats to promote a calm, submissive state rather than to reinforce excitement.

Feeding Guidelines

Don’t over-treat ~ While it can be tempting when your furry friend begs for more, resist the urge to be overly generous and keep treats regulated. Treats should complement your pet’s diet. Just like us, too many treats can lead to weight gain and upset the balance of their diet, which must remain complete and balanced for their health. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet’s daily caloric intake, so adjust regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, considering what they have consumed in treats throughout the day. This guideline also applies to treats given as general rewards for good behavior. If you neglect this, your pet may gradually gain weight, which is detrimental to their health.

Treat Wise ~ We always advise supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying something new. Some dogs (unlike cats) can be overly eager when it comes to tasty morsels and may not chew properly, leading to potential choking hazards.

When to give treats to your pet ~ The best time to offer treats is between meals, not right before or after feeding. Select a treat that your pet will relish. If you’re using treats as a training aid, they won’t be as effective immediately after your pet has finished a full meal.

What kind of treats are suitable for your breed, size, and age of dog or cat?
We recommend supervising your pet while giving treats, especially when introducing new ones. Many dogs tend to swallow treats without chewing, so monitor all sizes and ages until you are confident they can handle them safely. Cats typically gnaw on treats rather than consuming them immediately. Smaller dogs may find larger bones challenging, while larger dogs might try to gulp down medium-sized hard treats without chewing. Older pets with dental issues may require softer chews, so it’s essential to assess your pet’s size and eating habits.
