USAGE
This formula is suitable year-round for medium to large parrots, particularly African greys, cockatoos, large conures, eclectus, macaws, and pionus. Other bird species can transition to the Adult Lifetime Formula after a conversion period of 6 months.
Conversion: It is recommended that all birds begin with the High Potency Formula and stay on it for a minimum of 6 months.
Special needs: Ideal for birds that are moulting, overweight, underweight, highly active, living in colder environments, recovering from illness, or dealing with liver or kidney issues.
Weaning birds: Provide High Potency Formula for at least 6-9 months.
Breeding birds: Feed the High Potency Formula 1-2 months before breeding and continue until chicks are weaned, or for at least six months before switching back to the Adult Lifetime Formula. The quantity of supplemental certified organic vegetables and fruits can be increased until the chicks are fully weaned. For every 2 tablespoons (20 g) of formula, mix in ½ tablespoon (5 g) of certified organic peanuts or almonds and 1 tablespoon (10 g) of certified organic sunflower seeds.
Storage: Harrison's Bird Foods are free from artificial preservatives. After opening, consume the contents of a bag within 8 weeks. Storing in the fridge or freezer can help keep the food fresh.
FEEDING DIRECTIONS
Provide fresh food daily—do not simply "top off" existing food. To minimize waste, serve as distinct meals. Birds can eat as much as they desire, but refer to the following guidelines for approximate feeding amounts of High Potency Coarse (HPC) along with additional foods:
-
Pionus: 10 - 15g (1 - 1½ tbs) of HPC; ½ - 1 tsp additional foods
-
Amazon / Eclectus: 15 - 30g (1½ - 3 tbs) of HPC; 1 - 2 tsp additional foods
-
African Grey: 15 - 30g (1½ - 3 tbs) of HPC; 1½ - 2 tsp additional foods
-
Cockatoo: 15 - 50g (1½ - 5 tbs) of HPC; 2 - 3 tsp additional foods
-
Macaw: 20 - 50g (2 - 6 tbs) of HPC; 2 - 4 tsp additional foods
-
Toucan: 50 - 150g (5 - 15 tbs) of HPC; 3 - 9 tbs additional foods
-
Hornbill: 100 - 300g (10 - 30 tbs) of HPC; 2 - 4 tsp additional foods
FEEDING ADDITIONAL ITEMS
Harrison's products should comprise 75-80% of your bird's diet by volume. It is advisable that 15-20% of the total diet includes high-quality, ideally organic, vegetables and fruits. Beneficial items include dark yellow, meaty, or dark green leafy vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, mango, or papaya.
Additionally, it is suggested that 5% of the overall diet consists of high-quality, ideally organic, sources rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Examples include chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, or certain nuts. Refer to this article for more insights on the benefits of including these items.
It is not advisable to supplement with vitamins or other bird or animal dietary products.
[For birds suspected of having iron-storage disease: Avoid citrus fruits, tomatoes, kiwi, strawberries, and other foods containing vitamin C. Steer clear of grapes, currants, raisins, liver, red meat, egg yolk, or dark green vegetables like spinach, as they may have high iron content.]
