What types of treats are best for your dog's or cat's breed, size, and age?
We suggest supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when introducing a new one. Many dogs tend to gulp treats without chewing, so keep an eye on all sizes and ages until you are confident they can handle it safely. Cats typically nibble on treats rather than devouring them quickly. Smaller dogs might find larger shank bones too big, while larger dogs may try to swallow medium-sized harder treats in one go. Older pets with dental issues may require softer chews, so it's essential to assess your pet’s size and eating habits.

Storage: Keep in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Ensure the product pouch is zip-locked to maintain freshness. For bulk purchases, store any unused product in an airtight container to preserve freshness and hygiene.

Benefits

Maintaining Pet Oral and Dental Hygiene is crucial for your pets. They can’t communicate pain, so it’s essential to regularly check their gums and teeth. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats assists in removing plaque and tartar. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is also advisable!

Treats for training sessions: Treats are valuable tools in training as they help keep your pet focused on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. For training, treats should be small and easy to swallow, requiring minimal chewing so you can quickly reward desired behaviors. Ideal training treats are relatively soft and about the size of a pea. Pets typically care less about the size of the treat and more about the quantity. Larger treats work well for rewarding good behavior, as your pet has to pause, chew, and take their time enjoying it.

How to use dog treats effectively: The most beneficial way to use treats is to reinforce a calm and submissive demeanor. Avoid using treats to reward an excited or overstimulated state. Always allow your pet to sniff the treat first, but hold it out of reach and wait. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can smell from over 5 meters away, so there’s no need to put the treat right under their nose. Once they catch the scent, dogs may initially jump around or even leap onto you. If this happens, convey your disapproval through your body language and demeanor; your patience as an owner will lead to a well-mannered pet. They will learn that a calm approach yields results, sitting patiently and looking at you in anticipation. At that moment of calm, reward them with the treat. Treats should not be used to reinforce an excited pet but rather to encourage a calm, submissive state.

Feeding Guidelines

Avoid over-treating ~ Although it can be tempting when your furry friend begs for more, resist the urge to be overly generous and keep treats in moderation. Treats are intended to complement your pet’s diet. Just like us, too many treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet’s diet, which needs to be complete and balanced for their well-being. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, so adjust regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, taking into account what they have consumed in treats throughout training sessions. This guideline also applies to treats given as general rewards for good behavior. Failing to do so can result in gradual weight gain, which is detrimental to your pet’s health.

Treat Wise ~ We always advise that your pet enjoys treats under supervision, particularly when they're trying a new treat. Some dogs (unlike cats) can be overly enthusiastic about tasty snacks and may neglect proper chewing, leading to potential choking hazards.

When to offer treats to your pet ~ The best time to give treats is between meals, rather than immediately before or after a meal. Choose a treat that your pet will relish. If using treats as a training aid, they won’t be as effective right after your pet has eaten a full meal.
