What type of treats are appropriate for your dog's or cat's breed, size, and age?
We recommend supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, particularly when introducing a new one. Many dogs tend to gulp down treats without chewing, so keep an eye on pets of all sizes and ages until you are confident they can handle them safely. Cats usually chew treats more slowly, while smaller dogs might find larger bones difficult, and bigger dogs may try to swallow medium-sized harder treats quickly. Older pets with dental issues may require softer chews, so it's essential to consider your pet's size and eating habits.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Ensure the pouch is zip-locked for optimal freshness. For bulk purchases, keep the unused product in an airtight container for longevity and hygiene.

Benefits

Pet Oral and Dental Hygiene is crucial for your pets. They cannot communicate discomfort, so regularly checking their gums and teeth is essential. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats will assist in removing plaque and tartar. Regular teeth brushing is also recommended!

Treats for training sessions: Treats serve as an effective tool during training, helping keep your pet focused on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. For training, treats should ideally be small and easy to swallow, requiring minimal chewing so you can reward behaviors promptly. Ideal training treats are soft and about the size of a pea. Pets don’t mind the size of the treat; it’s the quantity that impresses them. Larger treats are better suited for rewarding good behavior, as your pet will need to stop, chew, and take their time enjoying it.

How to use dog treats most effectively: The best way to use treats is to reinforce a calm, submissive state. Avoid using treats to reward an excited or overly stimulated state of mind. Always allow your pet to smell the treat first, holding it up out of reach and waiting. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can smell from over 5 meters away, so there's no need to put the treat directly under their nose. Once they catch the scent, dogs may initially become excited and jump around. If this occurs, show them that you disapprove through your demeanor and body language; your patience as an owner will result in a well-behaved pet. They will learn that a calm approach yields results, sitting quietly and looking at you in anticipation. At the moment of calm, reward them with the treat. Avoid using treats to reinforce an excited pet; instead, use them to encourage calmness and submission.

Feeding Guidelines

Don’t over-treat ~ While it may be tempting when your furry friend begs for more, refrain from being overly generous and maintain a regulated treat intake. Treats are intended to complement your pet’s diet. Just like us, excessive treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet's diet, which must be complete and balanced for their well-being. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, so adjust regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, taking into account what they have eaten in treats during training sessions throughout the day. This guideline also applies to treats given as general rewards for good behavior. If you don’t follow this, your pet may gradually gain weight, which can negatively impact their health.

Treat Wise ~ We always suggest supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, particularly when trying a new one. Some dogs (though it’s uncommon for cats) can be overly enthusiastic about tasty snacks and may not chew properly, leading to a potential choking hazard.

When to give treats to your pet ~ The best time to offer treats is between meals, not immediately before or after. Select a treat that your pet will relish. If using treats as a training aid, it’s less effective right after your pet has had a full meal.
