A standard bio-filter medium designed with a spacious colonization area to support bacteria cultures, ensuring high efficiency.

SUBSTRAT can be arranged in one or multiple layers. This filter material, crafted from sintered glass, is highly porous. Its surface structure provides ideal conditions for beneficial purification bacteria to thrive. Each litre offers a colonizable area of 450 m².

EHEIM SUBSTRAT is washable and can be reused.

The primary role of biological filter media is to create the best conditions for bacterial colonization, allowing for the rapid development of a bacteria lawn. These bacteria consume various dirt particles and transform substances that could be harmful to the aquarium.

Following the initial cleaning process conducted by mechanical filter media (such as EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration becomes crucial. It plays a vital role in maintaining clear, healthy water and stable water parameters. That’s why we have dedicated extensive research efforts to the advancement of biological filter media.

Tip:

Always avoid cleaning or replacing all filter media at once (and refrain from overly vigorous cleaning). Completely destroying the bacteria cultures will hinder re-colonization. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in internal filters like aquaball and biopower are perfect for partial cleaning.
