Certain breeds, including Maine Coon, Abyssinian, Siamese, Russian Blue, and Burmese cats, have been noted to experience CRF more frequently. Hypokalaemia is commonly linked with CRF in felines. Potassium replacement therapy is recommended for patients whose serum potassium levels fall below 4 mEq/L, even if they do not display clinical signs of hypokalaemia. Since only 2% of total body potassium exists in the blood serum, normal serum levels can disguise severe overall potassium deficiency. If left undetected, hypokalaemia can result in serious complications for otherwise healthy-appearing patients with CRF. Research has indicated that dietary potassium supplementation alone can sometimes slow the progression of CRF. Potassium gluconate is the preferred choice for potassium replacement therapy in cats.
