Benefits

Maintaining your pet's oral and dental health is crucial. Since pets can't communicate their discomfort, it's important to regularly check their gums and teeth. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats aids in the removal of plaque and tartar. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is also advisable!

Treats for training sessions: Treats can be an effective tool in training, helping to keep your pet focused on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. Ideally, training treats should be small and easily consumed with minimal chewing, allowing you to reward good behavior quickly and frequently. Perfect training treats are relatively soft and about the size of a pea. Pets tend to care less about the size of the treat and more about the frequency. Larger treats are better suited for rewarding good behavior, as they require your pet to stop, chew, and take their time eating.

Maximizing the effectiveness of dog treats: The best way to utilize treats is to reinforce a calm and submissive demeanor. Avoid rewarding an excited and overstimulated state. Always let your pet smell the treat first, holding it up out of reach and waiting. Remember that pets, especially dogs, can detect scents from over 5 meters away, so there's no need to place the treat right under their nose. Initially, dogs might jump around or even leap on you when they catch the scent. If this occurs, use your body language and attitude to indicate disapproval; your patience as an owner will lead to a well-behaved pet. They will learn that staying calm and waiting while looking at you in anticipation leads to rewards. When they are calm, give them the treat. Use treats to promote a calm state rather than to encourage excitement.

Feeding Guidelines

Avoid over-treating ~ While it may be tempting to give in when your furry friend begs for more, it's important to regulate treat consumption. Treats should complement your pet's diet. Just like us, too many treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet's diet, which must be complete and balanced to maintain their health. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, so adjust regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, considering what they have consumed in treats throughout the day. This also applies to treats given as general rewards for positive behavior. Failing to regulate this can result in gradual weight gain, which is detrimental to your pet's health.

Treat Wise ~ We always advise supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying a new one. Some dogs (unlike cats) can be overly eager for tasty bites and may not chew adequately, leading to potential choking hazards.

When to give treats to your pet ~ The best time to offer treats is between meals, not immediately before or after feeding. Choose a treat that your pet will relish. If you’re using treats as a training reward, they won’t be as effective right after your pet has eaten a full meal.

What types of treats are appropriate for your pet’s breed, size, and age?
We recommend supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying something new. Many dogs tend to gulp down treats without chewing, so keep an eye on all sizes and ages until you’re confident they can handle them safely. Cats usually nibble on treats without rushing. Smaller dogs may find larger bones or treats cumbersome, while larger breeds might try to swallow medium-sized harder treats without chewing. Older pets with dental issues may require softer treats, so it’s essential to assess based on your pet’s size and eating habits.
