What types of treats are best for your breed, size, and age of dog or cat?
We advise supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying a new one. Many dogs tend to gulp treats without chewing, so it's important to keep an eye on pets of all sizes and ages until you're confident they can handle it without choking. Cats typically take their time gnawing on a treat rather than consuming it quickly. Smaller dogs might find larger bones or treats too big, while larger dogs may try to devour medium-sized harder treats without chewing. Older pets with dental issues will require softer chews, so it's essential to assess your pet's size and eating habits.

Storage: Keep in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. Ensure the product is kept zip-locked for freshness. For bulk purchases, store any unused product in an airtight container to maintain freshness and hygiene.

Benefits

Oral and Dental Health is crucial for your pets. They can't tell us when they're in discomfort, so regularly checking their gums and teeth is essential. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats aids in plaque and tartar removal. Regular tooth brushing is also a good practice!

Treats for Training Sessions: Treats are an effective tool during training as they help keep your pet focused on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. For training purposes, treats should be small and easy to swallow, requiring minimal chewing so you can reward behaviors promptly and frequently. Ideal training treats are relatively soft and about the size of a pea. Pets aren't overly concerned with the size of the treat; it's the number of treats that impresses them. Larger treats work well as rewards for good behavior, as they require your pet to stop, chew, and take their time enjoying it.

Effective Use of Dog Treats: The best way to utilize treats is to reinforce a calm, submissive state. Avoid using treats to reward an excited or overly stimulated state of mind. Always allow your pet to sniff the treat first, holding it up away from them and waiting. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can detect scents from over 5 meters away, so there's no need to place the treat directly under their nose. After they catch the scent, dogs may initially jump around or even jump on you. If this occurs, communicate your disapproval through your demeanor and body language; your patience as an owner will lead to a well-behaved pet. They will learn that a calm and composed approach yields rewards, sitting and waiting while looking at you in quiet anticipation. At that moment of calm, reward them with the treat. Avoid using treats to encourage an excited pet; use them to promote a calm, submissive demeanor instead.

Feeding Guidelines

Avoid Over-Treating ~ While it can be tempting when your furry friend begs for more, resist the urge to overindulge and keep treats regulated. Treats should supplement your pet's diet. Just as with humans, excessive treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet's diet, which must remain complete and balanced to ensure their health. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, so be sure to adjust regular meal portions to prevent weight gain, considering what they have consumed in treats during training sessions throughout the day. This applies to treats given as general rewards for good behavior. If not managed well, your pet may gradually gain weight, which can be detrimental to their health.

Supervision is Key ~ We always recommend supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying something new. Some dogs (unlike cats) can be overly enthusiastic about tasty bites and may not chew properly, posing a potential choking risk.

When to Offer Treats ~ The best time to provide treats is in between meals, rather than right before or after a meal. Choose a treat that your pet will enjoy. If you're using treats as a training aid, they won't be as effective immediately following a full meal.
