The primary function of biological filter media is to provide optimal conditions for bacterial colonization, allowing for the rapid development of a bacterial lawn. These bacteria feed on various debris and transform substances that are harmful to the aquarium.
Following the initial cleaning by mechanical filter media (such as EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration becomes crucial. It ensures clear, healthy water and stable water parameters. This is why we have dedicated extensive research to the advancement of biological filter media.
Tip:
Avoid cleaning or replacing all filter media simultaneously (and refrain from excessive cleaning). It's important not to completely eliminate the bacteria cultures, as this can hinder recolonization. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in internal filters like aquaball and biopower are ideal for partial cleaning.
