With a high bacterial count, the reduction of peak nitrite levels becomes more manageable, resulting in longer maintenance intervals for the filter material. EHEIM SUBSTRATpro is compatible with both freshwater and marine environments, is washable, and can be reused.

The primary function of biological filter media is to provide optimal conditions for bacterial colonization, enabling a thriving bacteria lawn to form quickly. These bacteria consume various dirt particles and convert substances that are harmful to the aquarium. Following the initial cleaning by mechanical filter media (such as EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration becomes crucial. It ensures crystal-clear, healthy water and stable water parameters. This is why we have dedicated extensive research to the development of biological filter media. Tip: Avoid cleaning or replacing all the filter media simultaneously (and refrain from excessive cleaning). It’s vital not to completely eliminate the bacterial cultures, as this will hinder recolonization. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in internal filters like aquaball and biopower are perfect for partial cleaning.
