SUBSTRATpro is crafted from spherically sintered quartz. Its spherical design allows for a high bulk density, ensuring that the filter's internal volume (in filter baskets or modules) is fully optimized. Moreover, the specially designed surface of the beads promotes the effective settlement of essential cleaning bacteria, resulting in a robust bacterial colony.
This abundant bacterial presence significantly reduces nitrite spikes and prolongs the lifespan of the filter material.
EHEIM SUBSTRATpro is compatible with both freshwater and saltwater environments, is washable, and can be reused multiple times.

Biological filter media
The primary function of the biological filter medium is to create the ideal environment for bacterial cultures to thrive, allowing a bacterial lawn to establish quickly. These bacteria consume various dirt particles and transform substances that are vital for the aquarium's ecosystem.
Following the initial cleaning with mechanical filter media (such as EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration becomes crucial. It guarantees clear, healthy water and stable water parameters. This is why we have dedicated extensive research to developing effective biological filter media.
Tip:
Avoid cleaning or replacing all biological filter material at once (and refrain from excessive cleaning). It’s important not to completely destroy the bacterial cultures; doing so may delay re-colonization. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in the aquaball and biopower internal filters are perfect for partial cleaning.
