Supplement

For Dogs and Cats

Kaligel delivers potassium gluconate in a gel format, designed to provide dietary potassium supplementation in instances of hypokalaemia.

Active ingredient: Potassium Gluconate

Pack size: 50g

Indications for use:

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is the most prevalent type of kidney disease in dogs and cats. While CRF can affect pets of any age, it is often viewed as a condition of older animals, with its occurrence rising as pets age. Research indicates that 53% of cats diagnosed with CRF are over 7 years old. Certain breeds, including Maine Coon, Abyssinian, Siamese, Russian Blue, and Burmese cats, have been noted to experience CRF more frequently.

  • Hypokalaemia is commonly linked with CRF in felines.
  • Potassium replacement therapy is recommended for patients whose serum potassium levels fall below 4 mEq/L, even if they do not display clinical signs of hypokalaemia.
  • Since only 2% of total body potassium exists in the blood serum, normal serum levels can disguise severe overall potassium deficiency.
  • If left undetected, hypokalaemia can result in serious complications for otherwise healthy-appearing patients with CRF.
  • Research has indicated that dietary potassium supplementation alone can sometimes slow the progression of CRF.
  • Potassium gluconate is the preferred choice for potassium replacement therapy in cats.
  • Long-term potassium supplementation at a daily dose of 2 mEq is advised for all cats suffering from CRF.
  • Potassium gluconate can be safely given orally, and KALIGEL allows cat owners to easily manage the daily dosage schedule.

Dosage: The typical dose ranges from 2 to 6 mEq of potassium per cat each day (half a teaspoonful [2.5g] of Kaligel provides 2 milliequivalents of potassium), depending on the cat's size and the degree of hypokalaemia. Dosage should be modified based on clinical response and repeated serum potassium concentration measurements. The recommended starting dosage for adult cats is 2.5g twice daily.

The suggested dosage for dogs (per kg) mirrors that of cats.

Storage: Keep in a cool place below 25°C.
