Benefits

Maintaining your pet's oral and dental health is crucial. Since they cannot communicate their discomfort, it’s important to regularly check their gums and teeth. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats will aid in reducing plaque and tartar buildup. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is also recommended!

Treats for training sessions: Treats are an effective tool during training, as they help keep your pet focused on you and the learning process, regardless of their age. For training, treats should ideally be small and easy to swallow, requiring minimal chewing so you can reward behaviors quickly and frequently. Ideal training treats are soft and about the size of a pea. Pets care less about the size of the treat than the quantity; larger treats are better for rewarding good behavior, as your pet must stop, chew, and take the time to eat them.

Using dog treats effectively: The best way to use treats is to reinforce a calm, submissive demeanor. Avoid rewarding an excited or overly stimulated state with treats. Always allow your pet to sniff the treat first, but hold it up and wait. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can smell from over 5 meters away, so you don’t need to put the treat right under their nose. Once they catch the scent, dogs may start to jump around or even jump on you. If this occurs, communicate your disapproval with your body language and attitude; your patience will yield a well-mannered pet. They will learn that maintaining a calm demeanor leads to rewards, sitting and waiting while looking at you in quiet anticipation. At the moment they are calm, give them the treat. Use treats to reinforce calmness rather than excitement.

Feeding Guidelines

Don’t over-treat ~ While it may be tempting to give in when your furry friend begs for more, it’s important to regulate treats. Treats should complement your pet’s diet. Just like us, too many treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet's diet, which needs to be complete and balanced for their health. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet’s daily calorie intake, so be sure to adjust regular meal portions to avoid weight gain, keeping in mind what they have consumed in treats during training sessions throughout the day. This also applies to treats given as rewards for good behavior. Failing to do this may result in your pet gradually gaining weight, which can negatively impact their health.

Treat Wise ~ We always advise supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when introducing a new one. Some dogs (unlike cats) can be overly eager with tasty morsels and may not chew adequately, creating a choking hazard.

When to give treats: The best time to give treats is between meals, rather than immediately before or after. Select a treat that your pet will appreciate. If you are using treats for training, they will not be as effective if given right after your pet has eaten a full meal.

What kind of treats are suitable for your breed, size, and age of dog or cat?
We recommend supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying something new. Many dogs tend to gulp down treats without chewing, so it's important to watch them, regardless of their size or age, until you’re confident they can manage without choking. Cats typically gnaw on treats without rushing. Smaller dogs might find larger items like shanks too big, while larger dogs may attempt to gulp down medium-sized harder treats without chewing. Older pets with dental issues will need softer chews, so it’s essential to consider your pet’s size and eating habits.
