Benefits

Maintaining your pet's oral and dental health is essential. Since they can't communicate when they are in discomfort, it's crucial to regularly inspect their gums and teeth. Chewing on Zeal® Pet Treats can assist in removing plaque and tartar buildup. Regularly brushing your pet's teeth is also highly recommended!

Treats for training: Treats are a beneficial tool during training sessions as they help maintain your pet's focus on you and the learning experience, regardless of their age. Ideally, training treats should be small and easy to swallow, requiring minimal chewing so you can quickly reward desired behaviors. Perfect training treats are relatively soft and about the size of a pea. Pets are more impressed by the quantity than the size of the treat. Larger treats work well for rewarding good behavior, as they require your pet to pause, chew, and take their time to enjoy them.

Maximizing the effectiveness of dog treats: The best way to use treats is to encourage a calm and submissive demeanor. Avoid using treats to reward an excited or overly stimulated state. Always allow your pet to sniff the treat first, holding it out of reach while you wait. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can detect scents from over 5 meters away, so there's no need to place the treat directly under their nose. If they start to jump around or become too excited, show disapproval through your body language and demeanor. Your patience as an owner will result in a well-behaved pet. They will learn that maintaining a calm demeanor leads to rewards, as they sit and wait expectantly for you. At the moment of calm, give them the treat. Use treats to encourage a calm, submissive state rather than to reward an excited pet.

Feeding Guidelines

Don’t over-treat ~ Although it can be tempting to indulge your furry companion when they ask for more, it's important to regulate their treat intake. Treats should supplement your pet’s diet. Just like us, too many treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet's diet, which needs to be complete and balanced for their well-being. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, so adjust their regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, considering the treats given during training sessions throughout the day. This guideline also applies to treats offered as rewards for good behavior. Failure to do so may lead to gradual weight gain, which can be detrimental to your pet's health.

Treat Wise ~ We always suggest supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying out a new one. Some dogs (less commonly cats) can be overly eager with tasty morsels and might not chew thoroughly, increasing the risk of choking.

When to give treats to your pet ~ The best time to offer treats is between meals, not immediately before or after a meal. Select a treat that your pet will love. If you're using treats as a training incentive, they will be less effective right after your pet has had a full meal.

What kind of treats are suitable for your breed, size, and age of dog or cat?
We recommend supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying a new one. Many dogs tend to gulp down treats without chewing, so monitor all sizes and ages until you're confident they can handle them without choking. Cats typically nibble on treats without rushing. Smaller dogs may find larger items, like shanks or bones, too big, while larger dogs might attempt to swallow medium-sized harder treats too quickly. Older pets with dental issues will require softer chews, making it essential to evaluate your pet's size and eating habits.
